Origami Ice Cream Cone → Ghost

Origami, much like Halloween, is all about the art of transformation. Often, the same basic shapes are used to create multiple models—giving you a result that is nothing short of magical!

Here, learn how your child can make a simple origami ice cream cone that can be turned into a paper ghost like the one Dev saw in Episode 10: "Fin-Tastic Fabio" with a few minor tweaks. Both models can be decorated to reflect your child's unique personality and look great added to the front of handmade cards to send to family or friends.

(If your family participates in the "You've Been Booed!" Halloween tradition, add an origami ghost in with your basket of treats)!

Step 1

Start with an 8 ½ inch x 11 inch sheet of paper that has been cut into an 8 1/2 inch x 8 1/2 inch square. The easiest way to do this is to fold the bottom left corner of the paper up so it touches the right vertical edge of the paper. Crease well, then use your scissors to cut along the horizontal line this fold creates. When you unfold your triangle shape, your paper will be a perfect square.

Step 2

Create a kite base. This is one of the most common base forms used to make simple origami models. Fold the paper in half along the crease you made in Step 1 to create a triangle shape. Unfold the paper, then fold the left and right sides in to touch the middle vertical crease so you create a kite shape.

Step 3

Fold the left and right corners down to make triangular flaps that stick out on the sides of your kite shape.

Step 4

Flip the paper over. Fold the flaps of the triangles you made in the last step so they lay flat against the sides of the kite shape.

Step 5

Fold the top left and right corners of the paper in so they meet the middle vertical crease.

Step 6

Fold the top triangle point down, then up slightly to create a pleated accordion fold. Do this a second time towards the top of the shape. (The exact placement of these folds doesn't matter, since they are simply being used to represent the layers of the ice cream cone.)

Step 7

Flip your paper over. Use markers, colored pencils, or crayons to color the ice cream cone brown. Use your favorite colors to draw yummy sprinkles on the ice cream.

Now transform Your Origami Ice Cream Cone into a Halloween Ghost! With just a few simple modifications, we can turn this paper ice cream cone into an origami ghost.

Step 8

When you get to Step 6, fold the top of the model straight down instead of making the second accordion fold. There should be a triangle point that is touching the first accordion fold. (This creates the head of the ghost.)

Step 9

In Step 7, fold the bottom pointed end up and to the right to make it look like your ghost is flying. Draw eyes and a mouth on your ghost. (If your child wants to fold multiple models, try experimenting with different facial features to see how a ghost can go from cute to spooky based on its expression!
